The Birthplace of American Wine: The Monticello Wine Trail

It was 1774 and young Thomas Jefferson was overseeing the planting of grape vines on his Monticello estate. The seeds of America’s wine industry were planted and the Monticello Wine Trail was born. Over 240 years later, we visited the area and we saw a tremendous variety, both in terms of the quality of the wines and in the tasting experiences.

The Immigrant Experience on NYC’s Lower East Side

Despite the tenements and squalor of New York in the early 1900s, a beautiful culture flourished in the slums of the Lower East Side. When we lived in New York City, this area south of Houston and east of Broadway was a bit of a mystery to us, so when we had the opportunity to take a Lower East Side walking tour, we jumped at the chance.
